I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who have been able to make the journey to the Club to show your support. Since re-opening, the Club has had a steady flow of Members and Reciprocals coming in to use the Dining Room. Fountain Court has been a very popular addition, one that it is hoped may be repeated in the future. The Eat Out to Help Out scheme was successful and increased the business in what is in normal years a very quiet month.
As the City starts to come back to life it is vital for the Club to ensure that costs are carefully managed and key to this is making sure that the staffing levels are correct. Whilst I urge you all to support the Club when you are in the City, it would be helpful for the Secretary to know how many diners are expected each day therefore I ask that, when possible, you reserve a table by 5.00pm the day before you wish to dine. I do not want to take the spontaneity out of visiting the Club and sometimes reserving a table may not be possible however please do if you are able.
The standard opening hours remain 9.00am until 5.00pm however no Member will be asked to leave after a long lunch! Breakfast will be served again from Monday 28th September. Unless demand dictates, dinner will not be served until January.
I am delighted to let you know that the Club is now able to hold certain events of up to 30 people depending on individual requirements and the Club’s ability to meet the current social distancing guidelines. At present only meetings are allowed and a variety of catering options are available. Any Member wishing to hold meetings, or to discuss future events as the guidance changes, is asked to contact the Events department.
The new layout in the Dining Room, incorporating the Bar, has been a great success and will remain in this layout until demand is such that the Members’ Bar needs to reopen. However the bar is set with distanced furniture should Members wish to have their drinks in there.
On Wednesday 23rd September the AGM, postponed from April, will be held. This will take place at midday in the Drawing Room. I encourage you to attend this year and ask you to inform the Secretary’s Office of your attendance if possible as extra spacing will be needed for the necessary distancing measures. A drinks reception for attendees will be held in the Members’ Bar afterwards. The notice and 2019 Annual report has been posted however should any Members have not received this, please contact the Club.
Progress is continuing with the bedroom project. The roof structure is in place and the slating will begin later this month. The new internal walls and ceilings are being installed and it is hoped that the scaffolding will be down in November. The new lift installation will start in 10 days.
Those Members who have been to the Club since reopening will have noticed the new Porters’ Desk has been installed and is working well. Please contact the Secretary should any Member wish to have a tour of the site.
It is anticipated that room reservations will be taken from October. Further details, including the bedroom rates, will be communicated in the next month.
The Club is still welcoming Reciprocal Members and colleagues of Members so do please spread the word, The City of London Club is open and welcoming all.
I look forward to seeing you as soon as you are able to make the journey to the City.
